Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 02:21:38 GMT

SANTA CLARA – Welcome to the 49ers’ Letdown Week. Oh wait, that was two months ago, when they lost a Week 6 date in Cleveland after a lopsided win over NFC East contender Dallas. The 49ers Faithful filled this week’s mailbag with questions about both Sunday’s win in Philly and this coming Sunday’s visit by the Seahawks:Any update on Huf? How’s he doing? (@ashleyd907)A smiling (as always) Talanoa Hufanga walked through the locker room last week, with a support sleeve on his right knee, which is still awaiting surgery on a torn anterior cruciate ligament. He may be gone from the field but his positive spirit is not.The 49ers still carry out his postgame ritual, of awarding a player-of-the-game with a kukui-nut necklace, which Deebo Samuel proudly displayed after his career-high three touchdowns Sunday in Philadelphia. Samuel went on to win his third career NFC Player of the Week award Wednesday, though that does not come with a necklace, plaque or prize money. This team’s bond is...

With the rampant theft of catalytic converters long a vexing problem for thousands of frustrated car owners, San Jose leaders want to make it easier to nab the culprits pilfering the valuable devices from vehicles in the city.City leaders are proposing tweaking the current ordinance to make possessing an unattached catalytic converter illegal without proof of ownership. Individuals without proof would also face harsher fines. Currently, law enforcement and prosecutors can only seize and press charges for the devices when they find the car part carrying etchings, usually showing the original car owner’s license plate number.San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan and Councilmembers David Cohen and Pam Foley are pushing for the change and a hearing will take place before the city rules committee on Wednesday. The full council is expected to vote in early 2024.The law would institute a series of escalating fines if the same individual is found possessing stolen catalytic converters within the ...

By MICHAEL R. BLOOD | AP Political WriterLOS ANGELES — Two months after his historic ouster as House speaker, Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy announced Wednesday that he is resigning from his congressional seat in California. His announcement capped a stunning end for the one-time deli owner from Bakersfield, who ascended through state and national politics to become second in line to the presidency before a contingent of hard-right conservatives engineered his removal in October.McCarthy is the only speaker in history to be voted out of the job.“No matter the odds, or personal cost, we did the right thing,” McCarthy wrote in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal, announcing his decision.“It is in this spirit that I have decided to depart the House at the end of this year to serve America in new ways,” he wrote. His toppling from the chamber’s top post was fueled by grievances from his party’s hard-right flank, including over his decision to work with Democrats to keep the federal govern...
