Recipe: White LasagnaBy Melissa ClarkMade without any Bolognese or tomato sauce, a white lasagna is a celebration of pasta and vegetables bound together by a creamy béchamel. This version, brimming with herbs, spinach, asparagus and peas, is an ode to spring, like a baked pasta primavera in its richest form. Serve it in small squares as a first or pasta course, as it’s served in Italy, or in more substantial slabs as a meatless main course. It’s a bit of a project, so if you want to work ahead, you can make the béchamel up to a week in advance and store it in the refrigerator. The baked lasagna can also be made ahead and refrigerated for up to two days. Reheat, covered, in a 350-degree oven for 30 to 45 minutes.Yield: 6 main course or 12 appetizer or side-dish servingsTotal time: 3 hours, 15 minutesIngredientsFor the Béchamel:4 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for greasing the pan1/3 cup all-purpose flour4 cups whole milk, plus more if needed1 teaspoon fine sea or table salt, ...Los Angeles may replace peak-hour travel lanes with bike, bus lanes

On some of Los Angeles' busiest streets, street parking spots are removed and instead function as another lane for driving during peak traffic times. However, a proposal by the Los Angeles City Council could disallow driving those lanes, perhaps opening the door to them becoming bike and bus lanes. On Wednesday, the council asked for a study on the topic, specifically on the affected roads Alvarado Street, Vermont Boulevard, and La Brea and Roscoe avenues."Most peak hour lanes were installed many years ago, in an era where vehicle throughput was the primary (or only) consideration of street design, and the need for or desirability of these lanes has not been evaluated since their installation," read a motion authored by Councilmembers Bob Blumenfield and Mike Bonin. The council has not approved the changes and is so far only seeking a report on the move, which the Los Angeles Department of Transportation has been instructed to bring back within 90 days.Google says they'll use powerful new AI tools responsibly

Visual and performance artist Autumn Breon trained up and fully embarked on a career in aeronautics engineering before a series of inspirational events called her to pursue her creative side full-time. As an artist, Breon is concerned with creating images and experiences of beauty in the world — but always with the goals of justice, political and economic equity, and community care in mind. She recently debuted a new partly crowd-sourced performance piece, Protective Style, as part of The Performance Project at Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles. Accompanied by perennial collaborators the Black Fist Brass Band and dancers, Breon enacted a pageant of received wisdom from ancestors on the planet Esoterica centering around the embedding of personal and societal self-care tools in the accouterments of Black hair salons.Breon gets asked about the rocket science thing a lot, which is understandable. But L.A. Weekly also spoke to the artist about the process and meaning of Protective Style; he...What Title 42’s end means for California

By Wendy Fry | CalMattersA pandemic-era public health policy known as Title 42, used to turn away asylum seekers at the U.S. southern border, is coming to an end just before 9 p.m. tonight, prompting concerns about unprecedented migration flows.Meanwhile, hundreds of migrants have been waiting outside between border walls in San Ysidro for days, sometimes with nothing more to eat all day than a single granola bar handed out by Border Patrol officers.Federal, state and local officials have had more than two years to prepare for this moment. But officials running migrant shelters on both sides of the border say they have very little information about how to handle the anticipated increase in asylum seekers trying to cross from Mexico into California and other states.“Really, it is very much a touch-and-go situation, where we’re responding to needs in our community as they happen,” said Patrick Giuliani, policy analyst with Hope Border Institute, a Texas-based nonprofit that provides h...Latest news
