TOKYO (AP) — Most Japanese couldn’t recognize Lars Nootbaar a few weeks ago, before the World Baseball Classic opened. Few could even pronounce his name or spell it in English or Japanese. He’s becoming a household word in Japan, and fans are singing the praises of the St. Louis Cardinals outfielder at the Tokyo Dome, where he went 5 for 11 with two RBIs during Japan’s 3-0 start. The impromptu song lyrics have anointed Nootbaar as a Samurai and refer to him by his middle name — Tatsuji — which is his grandfather’s name. He’s playing with Japan because of his mother’s roots, the first non-Japan-born player chosen for the national team by ancestry.Hundreds now arrive at the Dome wielding pepper grinders, which has become his trademark with the Cardinals. Fans hold up signs calling Nootbaar an “American-born Samurai,” and his teammates address him by his Japanese nickname “Tachan.” Cardinals teammate Tommy Edman is playing in Tokyo with South Korea, also because o...

BERLIN (AP) — Miami-based investment group 777 Partners has completed its 64.7% majority stake takeover of Hertha Berlin. The German soccer club said Saturday that 777 had acquired the company shares previously owned by Lars Windhorst’s investment group. Windhorst said in October he wanted out after a breakdown in his relationship with the club.Windhorst had invested 374 million euros ($400 million) since 2019 on his dream of turning Hertha into a “big city club” but only ever saw the team fight relegation amid constant upheaval. Windhorst allegedly hired an Israeli detective agency to try and force Hertha’s previous president out, then also fell out with his successor. The sale of Windhorst’s shares was approved by the Hertha’s supervisory board and by the registered company behind the club. Financial details of sale were not disclosed.“This strategic partnership helps us to further advance the restructuring process and the economic consolidation of Hertha BSC,” Hertha president Kay ...

The BBC faces a spiraling revolt of its top sporting presenters amid a row over the broadcaster’s impartiality standards, after star football host Gary Lineker was chastised for tweets criticizing the U.K. government’s new asylum policies.Calls of hypocrisy were also leveled at the U.K. broadcaster on Saturday, as Labour leader Keir Starmer accused the BBC of “caving in” to the demands of Conservative Party members. The broadcaster’s sporting coverage was plunged into uncertainty due to a boycott from a group of hosts and co-hosts who disagreed with the BBC for attempting to penalize “Match of the Day” presenter Lineker for his recent comments against what he called the government’s “immeasurably cruel policy” on immigration. He has been told to “step back” from his BBC presenting duties.
