Dark & Stormy’s ‘The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie’ breathes new life into a neglected play

Jean Brodie is an unconventional educator. She exhorts the Scottish schoolgirls under her tutelage to turn away from safety and stability and run passionately into the arms of goodness, truth and beauty. She has much in common with Robin Williams’ life-affirming literature teacher in the film “Dead Poets Society.” But Jean Brodie is unapologetically open about playing favorites. She also often sets the curriculum aside entirely to regale with tales of past romances and her recent vacations. And, for one who claims devotion to her charges, she can seem more than a little self-absorbed.She stands at the center of “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie,” which began life as a 1961 Muriel Spark novel before Jay Presson Allen adapted it for the stage, then the screen, Maggie Smith taking home the Best Actress Oscar in 1970 for her portrayal of the title character. But Dark & Stormy Productions makes a convincing argument that the too-long-neglected play definitely deserves to be experienced.P...Grieving mother's efforts succeed as hands-free phone law nears for Missouri drivers

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Missouri has one of the loosest laws in the country when it comes to texting and driving, but that will change in the near future. Holding a phone to text, call, or perform other tasks while driving in Missouri will be considered illegal under SB 398. The legislation takes effect Monday as the Siddens Bening "hands-free" law. In 2019, one family from Columbia, Missouri, received a phone call no one wants to get. Randall Siddens, a father and husband, was struck while picking up cones after a triathlon race by a driver who was video-chatting. Five new Missouri laws to know that become official Monday Since then, Adrienne Siddens has been coming to the Missouri Capitol and advocating for a law to prohibit drivers from using their cell phone while driving. "She ended up swerving to miss the police officer, then ended up crashing into Randall and the back of the cone truck," recalled Adrienne. "He was thrown about 120 feet through the air, and he suffered a lot ...It's illegal to own these animals as pets in Illinois

By GRAHAM DUNBAR and JOSEPH WILSON (AP Sports Writers)GENEVA (AP) — FIFA suspended Spanish soccer federation president Luis Rubiales on Saturday while its disciplinary committee investigates his conduct at the Women’s World Cup final, which included kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips after Spain’s victory. The provisional suspension comes less than a week after Spain’s 1-0 victory over England in Sydney, Australia, and a day after Rubiales refused to resign, despite intense pressure from the Spanish government, women players, soccer clubs and officials. Rubiales’ conduct, which also included grabbing his crotch, has overshadowed the enormous accomplishment of Spain’s first Women’s World Cup title.Hermoso has said she did not consent to the kiss, and the team’s players have said they will not play any more games as long as Rubiales is in charge. It was not immediately clear how FIFA’s latest intervention might affect that.FIF...El Segundo Little League team advances to Little League World Series championship

SAN FRANCISCO — Sean Manaea didn’t walk off the mound with a lead, but got a standing ovation from the home crowd. They’d seen how the left-handed featured pitcher managed to tame a Braves team that destroys left-handed pitchers. It wasn’t Manaea’s fault his outing wasn’t enough. The Braves barrel up the ball better than most in the league, so it’s worth celebrating Manaea holding them to just two hard hits and five strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. But the little wins haven’t been enough for the Giants lately, and certainly wasn’t enough in the Giants’ 7-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday afternoon. The Giants have lost 14 of their last 19 games.Manaea had some of his best stuff despite not throwing his changeup, getting plenty of weak contact and 13 swing-and-misses between his fastball and slider. But the Braves don’t need gifts to get a win; Austin Riley’s solo blast off Manaea untied a tied game in the fift...Restaurant in Calistoga awarded Michelin star

WROCLAW, Poland (AP) — After a controversial win to retain his heavyweight boxing titles, Oleksandr Usyk is targeting a long-awaited and elusive unification fight with Tyson Fury.“I’m ready tomorrow,” the Ukrainian declared on Saturday when asked about Fury. This was after Usyk stopped British challenger Daniel Dubois in the ninth round. That win followed a disputed low blow which gave the Ukrainian champion time to recover.Fighting for the first time in more than a year and cheered on by fans waving Ukrainian flags, Usyk knocked down Dubois in the eighth round. Referee Luis Pabon stopped the fight when Usyk dumped him again in the ninth with a stiff right to the jaw.The fight was halted in the fifth round for what Pabon ruled was a low blow by Dubois which sent Usyk to the canvas. Replays showed the punch hitting around Usyk’s belt. It was not given as a knockdown but nor were any points deducted from Dubois, and Pabon urged Usyk: “Take your time.”The Ukrainian seemed to...Latest news
