Changes to state gun laws impacting background checks GREEN ISLAND, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Another part of a state gun law goes into effect Wednesday and changes the agency that processes background checks and what you’ll now need a background check for. Gun dealers will no longer submit requests directly to the FBI. Under New York Executive Law 228, on national instant criminal background checks, the state police are authorized as a “point of contact state” and will contact the FBI to initiate those background checks starting Wednesday. And the state is now requiring background checks for ammunition purchases.  Get the latest news, weather, and sports delivered right to your inbox! State lawmakers fail to override Parson's vetoes, concede pared-back state budget JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri lawmakers on Wednesday failed to override any of the governor's budget vetoes, conceding to a pared-back budget that is $555 million slimmer than they passed. The GOP-led Legislature did not attempt to override Republican Gov. Mike Parson on most of his budget cuts during its abbreviated annual September session focused on vetoes. But House lawmakers made several fruitless efforts to spare extra funding for law enforcement, seniors and mental health services. Senators gaveled in briefly Wednesday and made no effort to override Parson, upending the House's work.On Tuesday, Parson said lawmakers put “quite a few things in the budget — more than normal” — and that he made numerous line-item vetoes to try to focus the spending on things that would have statewide impacts.“But I have to look at things beyond one House district or one Senate district,” Parson said. “At some point, everything can’t be a priority, and we have to make a decision.” ...

Stock market today: Wall Street churns to a mixed finish after highly anticipated inflation data By STAN CHOE (AP Business Writer)NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street churned to a mixed finish on Wednesday after a highly anticipated report showed inflation accelerated across the country last month, but not by much more than expected. The S&P 500 edged up by 5.54 points, or 0.1%, to 4,467.44 after flipping between small gains and losses a few times through the day. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 70.46 points, or 0.2%, to 34,575.53, and the Nasdaq composite rose 39.97, or 0.3%, to 13,813.59.The modest moves followed a shaky immediate reaction to the inflation report across financial markets, where bond yields and stock prices swung back and forth several times. The report said U.S. consumers paid prices last month that were 3.7% higher than a year earlier, up from July’s inflation rate of 3.2%.That’s discouraging for shoppers paying higher prices, but much of the acceleration was because of higher fuel costs, which can swing very sharply and quickly. Burbank mayor addresses backlash over drag queen spanking video Burbank Mayor Konstantine Anthony is facing criticism from largely conservative circles after he was recorded on video being spanked by a drag queen over the weekend, but he's defending his actions and arguing that some of those critics are responding out of anti-LGBTQ+ bigotry. In the video, Anthony can be seen getting spanked, a moment the clip shows synced to the Village People's "Macho Man."Comments on the video, which was posted by the Armenian-American podcast WiseNuts, largely disparaged Anthony and his decision to participate. For its part, the WiseNuts account added the hashtags "#beaman," "#clownshow" and "#embarrassing.""This is an excellent example of the humiliation a man will subject himself to in order to pander to the degenerate alphabet cult crowd. He debases the honor of elected office every time he appears in public," wrote James Clarke, a candidate for state Assembly."I'm so proud of our Mayor in Burbank. He achieved the maximum level of stupidity," added Alex Bad...
