What scientists say keeps mosquitoes at bay (CNN) — For as long as there have been humans, there have been mosquitoes buzzing around in hopes of a bite to eat.“We’re always in a war, a perpetual war against mosquitoes,” said Dr. Conor McMeniman, an assistant professor of molecular microbiology and immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute in Baltimore. It’s a war that often turns deadly — mosquitoes kill more people than any other animal as they spread diseases such as malaria, dengue fever and West Nile virus.Even if the mosquitoes near you don’t carry these diseases, they’re still a nuisance. Derrick Rose hits free agency after Knicks decline option; Josh Hart extends deadline for player option Derrick Rose’s tenure in New York — a two-stint rollercoaster that briefly resuscitated his career— is probably finished.Prior to Saturday night’s deadline, the Knicks declined the point guard’s $15.5 million team option for next season, sending Rose into free agency. The move was expected since Rose had no spot in Tom Thibodeau’s rotation. Still, there was a chance the Knicks kept Rose on the books to use his expiring contract in a trade.Rose, 34, was acquired via trade from the Pistons in 2021 and played an integral role in leading the Knicks to the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs that season. It earned him a lucrative contract that summer, but an ankle injury sabotaged Rose’s following season and he never recovered a consistent role. In his last two seasons, Rose appeared in a combined 53 games.Despite the demotion, Rose was lauded as a team leader throughout the roster and praised by Thibodeau. There’s a chance Rose r...

Mayoral candidates make their final pitch to Torontonians ahead of Monday’s vote Four months after former mayor John Tory resigned after revealing he had an inappropriate affair with a member of his staff, Torontonians are just days away from choosing his successor. The final weekend of the long and winding mayoral byelection campaign saw some of the top candidates make their final pitches to voters. Olivia Chow, who has maintained a steady and commanding lead in public opinion polls since joining the race, continued to push her message that this election is about two choices: the status quo or change. “In this election, we have a choice. We could continue with the status quo. We could continue to let this city decline. Or we could choose to come together and build a city that is affordable, more caring and safer, where everyone belongs.”This mayoral race has been deja vu for Chow, who was also a strong favourite heading into the late stages of the 2014 municipal vote, which saw her ultimately finish third behind winner John Tory and runner-up Doug F...
