LAPD chief expresses concern about 'book and release' plan under new zero bail policy Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore is expressing concern about the county's new zero bail policy that is set to take effect this weekend which will allow some criminal suspects to be cited and released when they would have previously been held on bond. The new Pre-Arraignment Release Protocols are designed to rely less on the arrestee's ability to pay and more on their risk to the public or victim, Los Angeles County Superior Court stated following a July decision to institute the system on Oct. 1. According to the protocols, those arrested for low-level, non-violent offenses will be released at the location of arrest or booked and then released with a promise to appear at arraignment. L.A. County Superior Court won’t require cash bail for many offenses “A person’s ability to pay a large sum of money should not be the determining factor in deciding whether that person, who is presumed innocent, stays in jail before trial or is released,” Presiding Judge Samantha P. Jessner said ...

‘Not if but when’: Bay Area motorists are marking this valuable car part to thwart thieves LIVERMORE — Bay Area motorists worried that they’re targets for criminals looking to steal their catalytic converters drove to a Livermore college Tuesday to have the valuable car part tagged with traceable identification information and law enforcement insignia. The anti-theft etching event — the fourth one of its kind hosted by Livermore police and the automotive department at Las Positas College over the past year — drew dozens of drivers whose catalytic converters were marked with their license plate numbers and spray-painted with the Livermore Police Department badge logo. The purpose, Livermore police Officer Taylor Burruss said, is to deter would-be thieves who spot the police logo and make the car part traceable back to its owner if recovered by law enforcement. In some cases, a recovered part can be returned and reinstalled. In others, identified victims can help the authorities pursue charges. Burruss recalled at least three cases where etching helped...

Harry and Meghan’s team expected NDAs from public school kids and teachers during 2021 NYC visit: report Newly released documents show that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s team made a number of demands on New York City public officials, teachers and elementary school children during the couple’s high-profile 2021 visit to the city, to ensure that they would be portrayed as favorably as possible and as quasi world leaders in their 2022 Netflix documentary. For example, for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s visit to a public elementary school in Harlem, their Archewell team asked school employees and students’ parents to sign a release for their participation in filming for an unnamed Sussex “project,” according to documents obtained by the Daily Mail. Pac-12 collapse: Washington president says $500 million counteroffer to ESPN would have been “stupid,” doubts it ever happened Washington president Ana Mari Cauce took issue with the notion that the Pac-12’s media rights negotiations with ESPN collapsed because the university presidents believed the conference was worth $50 million per school, or a whopping $500 million annually.Instead, Cauce said the $50 million figure was discussed last year as a target for the total revenue distributions to the campuses — meaning it would have included payouts from the College Football Playoff, the NCAA Tournament and the media rights deal.“In some models, it was possible for some schools to get $50 million,” Cauce told the Hotline in an interview earlier this month. “But at no time did anyone think we could all get $50 million in media rights. That would have been stupid.”Cauce explained that after the announced departures of USC and UCLA (in June 2022), commissioner George Kliavkoff told the 10 remaining presidents that 30 percent of the conference’s media valuation “just walked out the door.&#...
