It took Heston Kjerstad exactly two years to make his professional debut after the Orioles drafted him in 2020. He needed less than that to climb all the way up.The Orioles called up Kjerstad, ranked by Baseball America as the organization’s fifth-best prospect, to the major leagues Thursday, the team announced. The outfielder was removed for a pinch hitter in Triple-A Norfolk’s game Wednesday evening after Ryan Mountcastle exited with left shoulder discomfort he suffered on a swing in the first inning against the St. Louis Cardinals.Mountcastle’s health status is unknown as of Thursday afternoon, but Kjerstad’s promotion came amid a flurry of other roster moves ahead of Baltimore’s pivotal four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays beginning Thursday. Outfielder Ryan McKenna was optioned to Triple-A to make room for Kjerstad on the active roster, while Terrin Vavra was recalled and then immediately placed on the 60-day injured list with a strained rig...UMass out for revenge at Eastern Michigan

UMass coach Don Brown has two capable quarterbacks when last year he had none.Portal transfers Taisun Phommachanh (Clemson) and Carlos Davis (Western Kentucky) have different styles with a common problem. Both have a tendency of getting hurt in the second half. After guiding UMass to a 41-30 win at New Mexico State in the season opener, Phommachanh was injured the next week in a 59-14 loss at Auburn.Davis finished the Auburn game and looked sharp for three quarters in the Minutemen’s 43-28 loss to Miami (Ohio) in the home opener last Saturday at McGuirk Stadium. Before Davis left the game in the fourth quarter, he completed 22-of-32 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start.“Carlos is fine, we checked him out and he’s good to go,” said Brown. “He came out in the fourth quarter midway through but he played really well in the third quarter.“He showed some complementary football during that time and stayed the course and helped us get back into that game.”Davis...Why Patriots TE Mike Gesicki can’t share much intel about his ex-Dolphin teammates

Florida State is coming to Boston to play a football game in a possible hurricane. How rich is that for irony? The outer bands of Hurricane Lee are expected to hit the the region hours before Boston College (1-1) and No. 3 FSU (2-0) kick off on Saturday (noon) at Alumni Stadium in the ACC opener for both squads.“I mean, you’ve got to be kidding me,” said BC coach Jeff Hafley. “Usually when you go down there you are worried about a hurricane.“Who would ever guess Florida State coming to Boston that we’re going to be in a hurricane up here and not down there? This might be a first timer.”Most teams in the Northeast factor in at least one weather game per season, but they generally take place in the cold and sleet of November. This September surprise has Hafley and staff designing a game plan to accommodate both Lee and the Seminoles on both sides of the ball.“I have never played in hurricane-type weather but we will have a good plan,” said Hafley. “If you are forced to run it chan...Orioles hire Kerry Watson as public affairs VP; he becomes first African American member of club’s senior leadership team

LONDON (AP) — A former Austrian foreign minister who had invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to her wedding and danced a waltz with him at the 2018 reception said she has moved to St. Petersburg to set up a think tank there.Karin Kneissl, 58, announced on messaging app Telegram on Wednesday that her ponies, which she has been keeping in Syria, were taken to Russia on a Russian military plane.Kneissl, from the right-wing Freedom Party, served as foreign minister from 2017 to 2019. She was repeatedly criticized in Austrian and German media during that time for her pro-Russia views. Her dance with Putin came just months after Russia was accused of poisoning former spy Sergei Skripal, and his daughter Yulia, with nerve agent Novichok in the United Kingdom.Kneissl said in her post that she moved her “books, clothes and ponies from Marseille to Beirut” in June 2022, after Russia invaded Ukraine, after which she says she was “banished” from France. MONTREAL — The number of people living in emergency shelters or on the streets surged in all regions of Quebec over the last four years but rose most sharply outside Montreal, a new report says.Commissioned by the province’s Health Department, the report found that “visible” homelessness in Quebec increased by about 44 per cent between April 2018 and October 2022, and by 33 per cent in Montreal. The analysis by the province’s public health institute says Quebec is witnessing a “regionalization of street homelessness,” as the number of people living outside has become increasingly significant in regions such as Mauricie—Centre-du-Québec, Estrie and the Outaouais. The survey was carried out on Oct. 11, 2022, and counted 10,000 homeless people across the province, including 4,690 in Montreal. While Montreal had by far the highest number of people living in shelters or on the streets, its percentage of the total number of homeless people in Quebec livi...Last defendant sentenced in North Dakota oil theft scheme

The last of four men charged in a scheme to steal millions of dollars worth of crude oil in western North Dakota has been sentenced.Darrell Woody Merrell, of Watford City, North Dakota, on Thursday pleaded guilty to felony charges of theft conspiracy and dealing in stolen property. A state district court judge sentenced him to serve nearly a year in jail and two years of supervised probation and to pay $200,000 restitution.Defense attorney Bob Bolinske Jr. told The Associated Press the jail sentence instead of prison time is “a huge, huge benefit” to Merrell.“It’s nothing he’s happy about, but it was a lot of relief off of him and kind of a testament to his information that he provided regarding a lot of other bad activity going on out there with relation to oil,” Bolinske said. The judge had previously rejected an initial plea deal with no jail time, he said.Prosecutor Ty Skarda confirmed that Merrell is the last defendant to be sentenced in connection with the case, te...Latest news
