Bill Madden: With Mets roster gutted, Buck Showalter a big loser at trade deadline

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 04:01:24 GMT

When the dust settled from last week’s trade deadline frenzy, the Astros, Rangers, Phillies and Rays could all consider themselves winners for having filled substantial starting rotation needs going forward, while it will take some time before the primary “sellers,” the Mets, White Sox and Cardinals, know how they fared. The pundits who love conducting this exercise every year have already declared the Reds, who failed to land a desperately needed frontline starter to bolster their chances of winning the National League Central and seemingly had the prospects to get one, as the big losers at the deadline. There are others who will say the Yankees were losers for doing next to nothing, even though they had a whole of holes to fill but not a whole lot to offer in return. But though it remained unspoken as Billy Eppler systematically blew up the 2023 Mets season and offered only muted hope about 2024, there was one notable loser to emerge in all of this and that would b...

Ex-Met David Wright thrilled to be commish for NYPD-FDNY clash at Citi Field: ‘These are the real heroes’

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 04:01:24 GMT

Growing up in Norfolk, Va., David Wright knew that December meant a holiday party at the Police Department. That’s where he and his three younger brothers would sit on Santa’s lap and recount their wish lists, some of which included toy police cars and sirens. The police were a big part of Wright’s childhood because his father, Rhon, was a cop who worked in the Norfolk Police Department for 33 years and retired as an assistant chief of police. When Rhon Wright worked in the canine unit, there was always a German shepherd at home. It was a thrill for David to see his dad in uniform with his badge, but he and his brothers also got a kick out of when his dad worked undercover and would flick the headlights of his unmarked car at them after arriving at a baseball game. Wright laughs as he recalls his dad in a Tidewater Tides jacket — the Mets’ former Triple-A affiliate — in a photo with his undercover unit.“It was really cool and neat, growing up...

JERUSALEM (AP) — A Palestinian gunman on Saturday opened fire in central Tel Aviv, critically wounding an Israeli police inspector before he was shot and killed by police, authorities said. The attack came a day after a settler rampage in the occupied West Bank killed one Palestinian, deepening the spiral of violence that has gripped the region for the past year and a half.Police identified the gunman as Kamel Abu Bakr, from a village near the flashpoint city of Jenin in the northern West Bank. Jenin’s refugee camp last month was the site of the largest Israeli offensive in the West Bank in nearly two decades. They said Bakr then opened fire, wounding a 40-year-old i...

The accident involving the King Sto. Nino 7, which was carrying 98 people, was the third to hit the country in just over a week, police said. All those on board were rescued, except for a female passenger who suffered a heart attack and died during the scramble for safety as water gushed into the wooden-hulled vessel in sunny weather off the island town of Corcuera in Romblon province, officials said.Sea accidents are common in the Philippines because of frequent storms, poorly maintained boats, overcrowding and weak enforcement of safety regulations. Could AI help detect more cancers from mammograms?

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 04:01:24 GMT

(The Hill) - An artificial intelligence (AI) analysis of mammograms detected more cancers than two breast radiologists working together, according to a new study, without increasing false positives and almost halving the radiologists' workload.Interim findings from the first randomized study investigating the use of AI in a national breast cancer screening program, published in the journal Lancet Oncology, suggested AI-supported screening detected 20 percent more cancers compared with the routine double reading of mammograms by two breast radiologists.European guidelines recommend double reading of screening mammograms to ensure high sensitivity. The U.S. does not have the same standard, but like many other countries is experiencing a shortage of breast radiologists. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S., accounting for about 30 percent of all new cancer cases in women each year.
