SF Giants’ small wins no match for dominant Braves

SAN FRANCISCO — Sean Manaea didn’t walk off the mound with a lead, but got a standing ovation from the home crowd. They’d seen how the left-handed featured pitcher managed to tame a Braves team that destroys left-handed pitchers. It wasn’t Manaea’s fault his outing wasn’t enough. The Braves barrel up the ball better than most in the league, so it’s worth celebrating Manaea holding them to just two hard hits and five strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. But the little wins haven’t been enough for the Giants lately, and certainly wasn’t enough in the Giants’ 7-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday afternoon. The Giants have lost 14 of their last 19 games.Manaea had some of his best stuff despite not throwing his changeup, getting plenty of weak contact and 13 swing-and-misses between his fastball and slider. But the Braves don’t need gifts to get a win; Austin Riley’s solo blast off Manaea untied a tied game in the fift...Restaurant in Calistoga awarded Michelin star

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Tyler Glasnow took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, and the AL wild card-leading Tampa Bay Rays beat the struggling New York Yankees 3-0 on Saturday.Glasnow had allowed just two baserunners on walks before DJ LeMahieu lined a single to right-center with one out in the sixth on the right-hander’s 77th pitch.Tampa Bay has just one no-hitter. WROCLAW, Poland (AP) — After a controversial win to retain his heavyweight boxing titles, Oleksandr Usyk is targeting a long-awaited and elusive unification fight with Tyson Fury.“I’m ready tomorrow,” the Ukrainian declared on Saturday when asked about Fury. This was after Usyk stopped British challenger Daniel Dubois in the ninth round. That win followed a disputed low blow which gave the Ukrainian champion time to recover.Fighting for the first time in more than a year and cheered on by fans waving Ukrainian flags, Usyk knocked down Dubois in the eighth round. Referee Luis Pabon stopped the fight when Usyk dumped him again in the ninth with a stiff right to the jaw.The fight was halted in the fifth round for what Pabon ruled was a low blow by Dubois which sent Usyk to the canvas. Replays showed the punch hitting around Usyk’s belt. It was not given as a knockdown but nor were any points deducted from Dubois, and Pabon urged Usyk: “Take your time.”The Ukrainian seemed to...Aussie Jett Lawrence completes fourth perfect season in motocross history

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Jett Lawrence has become the third rider to complete a perfect motocross season. The 20-year-old Aussie won both 450cc motos at Ironman Raceway Saturday in the AMA Motocross Championship finale, ending the season a perfect 22 for 22.Lawrence joins Ricky Carmichael (2002 and 2004), and James Stewart (2008) as the only riders to win every race of a motocross season.“It doesn’t feel real,” Lawrence said. “I started off so nervous hitting the gate (in moto 2), I don’t know how I led the first lap. Now we’re undefeated. To all the people who doubted me, here we are now.”Lawrence grabbed the holeshot in the opening moto at Ironman and staved off a mid-race challenge by Chase Sexton before pulling away to win by 5.8 seconds. A flinch at the gate cost Lawrence the holeshot in the second moto, but he still managed to slide into second exiting the first turn. A crash by leader Dylan Ferrandis allowed Lawrence to move to the front and he again faced...Shooter who killed 3 people at Jacksonville Dollar General store targeted Black people, sheriff says

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The San Diego Padres placed Jake Cronenworth on the 10-day injured list on Saturday with a fractured right wrist, ending his season.Cronenworth got hurt when he was hit by a 93-mph sinker from Brewers reliever Andrew Chafin during San Diego’s 7-3 loss Friday night in Milwaukee. X-rays confirmed what Cronenworth had already suspected, and further examination revealed a non-displaced fracture of the distal ulna bone.“It sucks,” Cronenworth said. “I want to be out there with my teammates and helping us get to the playoffs.”The 29-year-old Cronenworth batted .229 with 10 homers and 48 RBIs in 127 games this season for underachieving San Diego. He agreed to an $80 million, seven-year contract on April 1 that kicks in for next season.“Jake, obviously, is one of our core guys,” Padres President of Baseball Operations A.J. Preller said. “What he brings to the team every single day, that’s gonna be hard to replace for sure. The good news for Jake is no surgery. Cast it...The AP Top 25 Fared

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Even though he’d captured yet another gold medal, Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis wanted more. He always does. Before leaving the stage at world championships on Saturday, the vaulter known as “Mondo” had one request — raise the bar. He wanted three cracks at breaking his world record mark, the one he keeps breaking again and again. It didn’t happen. He was just too drained on a muggy night. Still, it made for great theater and after Duplantis rose from the mat following his final attempt, he faced the crowd and took a bow. Duplantis added a second straight world title by clearing 6.10 meters (20 feet), holding off runner-up Ernest John Obiena of the Philippines. Kurtis Marschall of Australia and American Christopher Nilsen, shared bronze.“It was great fun,” Duplantis said. For him, anyway, the reigning Olympic champion heading into Paris next summer. “Are you ever going to let us win?” Marschall cracked.Duplantis gave his competitors a ...Latest news
