SARATOGA – With a league championship and Central Coast Section playoff spot on the line, Del Mar’s playbook was not complicated on Friday night. On 22 of its 30 plays, Del Mar put the ball in Andre Latimore’s hands and let him go to work against Prospect. The senior quarterback put the team on his shoulders, rushing for 344 yards and passing for another 61 in the Dons’ 42-31 victory. It punched the Dons’ first ticket to the playoffs since 2011. Playing in the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s “C-League,” only the West Valley’s champion was given a guaranteed spot in postseason play.“We’ve been grinding for this for four years straight,” Latimore said after rushing for four touchdowns and passing for another. “To finally succeed, it’s the best feeling I could possibly feel right now.”As Del Mar celebrated on one side of the field, Prospect’s players tearfully embraced one another as their feel-good season came to a close. After enduring an 0-10 schedule in the tougher BVAL Santa ...Warriors: Steve Kerr wants to forget last year, but bad memories are inspiring hot start

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Warriors won their last two games at the buzzer.Klay Thompson’s game-winning jumper against the Sacramento Kings gave them win No. 4 and No. 5 against the Thunder came courtesy of Steph Curry’s layup off the high backboard over seven-footer Chet Holmgren’s outstretched arm. It was a bucket initially waved off for Draymond Green’s basket interference, then overturned to give Curry and Golden State the winning points when a review revealed Oklahoma City’s Josh Giddey had pulled the net and Green only grabbed the rim. Both thrilling. Both ugly, be it for poor shooting against the Kings or poor defense against the Thunder. But ugly wins are a beautiful sight for a Warriors team that would spiral when things got rough last season.“We’ve been good so far, executing down the stretch,” Kevon Looney said. “Last year we struggled with that. But this year it’s something we focused on, winning in the margins. E...Muslim student hit by car at Stanford, incident being investigated as hate crime

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Arab foreign ministers Saturday to find ways to ease Gaza’s growing humanitarian crisis. His mission is complicated by Israel’s insistence there can be no temporary cease-fire until all hostages held by Hamas are released. In unusually blunt language, the United Nations chief said conditions in Gaza are now “horrific” as fighting continues to escalate. With food, water and the fuel needed for generators that power hospitals and other facilities running out, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged an immediate cease-fire to allow humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.“An entire population is traumatized, nowhere is safe,” he said Friday. He said he had not forgotten the slaughter of civilians at the hands of Hamas militants when they launched their attack on Israel almost a month ago, but said civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected. He also said civilians must not be used as human shields, a...Daily horoscope for November 4, 2023

Palestinians in Gaza reported apparent Israeli airstrikes overnight into Saturday across the besieged enclave, including explosions in the south where Israel had told civilians to seek refuge as its ground operation intensifies in northern Gaza.Calls for a humanitarian pause increased with the UNRWA, the United Nation’s agency for Palestinian refugees, reporting the average Palestinian in Gaza is surviving on two pieces of bread a day, and only one of three water supply lines from Israel is operational. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday, “We are going full steam ahead” unless the hostages held by Hamas are released. The Palestinian death toll in the Israel-Hamas war has reached 9,227, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza. In the occupied West Bank, more than 140 Palestinians have been killed in violence and Israeli raids. The UNRWA says 72 of its staff members have been killed.More than 1,400 people in Israel have been killed, most of them in the Oc...The average Palestinian in Gaza is living on 2 pieces of bread a day, UN official says

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The average Palestinian in Gaza is living on two pieces of Arabic bread made from flour the United Nations had stockpiled in the region, yet the main refrain now being heard in the street is “Water, water,” the Gaza director for the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees said Friday. Thomas White, who said he traveled “the length and breadth of Gaza in the last few weeks,” described the place as a “scene of death and destruction.” No place is safe now, he said, and people fear for their lives, their future and their ability to feed their families. The Palestinian refugee agency, known as UNRWA, is supporting about 89 bakeries across Gaza, aiming to get bread to 1.7 million people, White told diplomats from the U.N.’s 193 member nations in a video briefing from Gaza. But, he said, “now people are beyond looking for bread. It’s looking for water.”U.N. deputy Mideast coordinator Lynn Hastings, who is also the humanitarian coordinator for the Palestinian territo...Pakistan wins toss, elects to field against New Zealand in crunch Cricket World Cup match
