Judge temporarily blocks NYC’s food delivery wage law By Samantha Delouya | CNNA judge has blocked New York City’s minimum wage law for food delivery workers from going into effect on July 12 until there is a hearing for a lawsuit filed by DoorDash and Grubhub against the city. The law, announced last month, would increase pay for app delivery workers to $17.96 per hour before tips on July 12 and bump up the minimum wage to nearly $20 per hour in April 2025. Delivery worker pay would also be adjusted annually for inflation. However, a lawsuit filed jointly by DoorDash and Grubhub to the Supreme Court of the State of New York alleges that the city’s new law would damage their businesses and harm delivery workers more than it would help them. Uber — the parent company of Uber Eats — filed a separate lawsuit against the city challenging the law.New York City’s minimum wage law comes after online meal delivery services surged in popularity during the pandemic, and food delivery volumes still remain higher than pre-Covid levels. On Friday, Jud...

San Jose must unseal Pink Poodle strip club scandal documents about firefighters, judge rules The City of San Jose was ordered by a judge on Friday to hand over investigatory documents related to a tawdry episode in October where a bikini-clad woman was seen stepping out of an on-duty firetruck and toward the Pink Poodle strip club.In May, The Mercury News sued the city after it repeatedly refused to release records about its internal probe of the Oct. 5 scandal and any subsequent disciplinary actions taken against the firefighters involved. Despite multiple attempts from reporters and a media attorney to obtain the documents through routine records requests, the city argued their release was not in the public’s interest and would have violated the employees’ privacy. In his ruling, Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Thomas E. Kuhnle wrote that the law requires the city to give over investigatory records whenever it imposes discipline on an employee — and that the highly publicized incident garnered enough evidence and importance to compel full disclosu...
