EDMONTON — The president of the University of Alberta says the school has replaced the director of its sexual assault centre over its endorsement of an open letter that questions the validity of sexual assault claims against Hamas during its deadly incursion into Israel last month.Bill Flanagan issued a statement on Saturday saying the director’s personal views “do not in any way represent those of the University of Alberta, and the use of the centre’s name in endorsing the letter was “improper and unauthorized.” A spokeswoman for the university confirms the letter Flanagan referred to criticizes Canadian political leaders for what it described as being complicit in Israel’s “killing” of Palestinians in Gaza.It also criticizes NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, claiming he “repeated the unverified accusation that Palestinians were guilty of sexual violence.”Israeli authorities have said they are investigating several cases of sexua...Romania clinches Euro 2024 spot with 2-1 victory over Israel

While it might seem counterintuitive, a football season can prove to be both successful and disappointing. That is the place the St. Thomas Tommies find themselves after extending their home winning streak to 31 games with a 16-10 victory over the Valparaiso Beacons on Saturday at O’Shaughnessy Stadium. The Tommies finished the season with a 7-1 record in the Pioneer Football League (8-3 overall), but the one loss prevented them from winning the conference title for the second season in a row. Drake finished 8-0, including a 52-21 victory over the Tommies on October 14 in Des Moines.“We just posed for a senior picture out there (on the field),” St. Thomas coach Glenn Caruso said when he met with the media after the game, “and we were happy to be able to (continue the home winning streak). But taking that picture and not having that championship banner in your hands does not feel great.“I love that our program is in a place where I can say that. BROOMFIELD — Broomfield football was a symphony in its 38-6 pummeling of Mesa Ridge in the Class 4A state quarterfinals on Saturday, with Brent Harris and Mason Smiley taking on the roles of conductors. From start to finish, the fifth-seeded Grizzlies couldn’t touch the No. 4 Eagles on offense or defense. Junior defensive back Smiley led the beat of the drums when not once, but twice, he picked off Mesa Ridge quarterback Bryce Riehl, one of which he returned straight to the end zone. Senior running back Harris took the offense to a crescendo with 106 of the team’s 359 total offensive yards, punching in a touchdown of his own.Together, the defending state champions composed a melody worthy of a trip to the state semifinals.“It felt great today. We did it for our seniors. We did it because this is our last time playing at Elizabeth Kennedy Stadium,” Smiley said. “That was definitely a game-changer on the first pick, but that second one? RJ Smith had a front row seat for all 35 games last season. But all he could do was watch. That finally changed for Smith when the Colorado men’s basketball team opened the 2023-24 season with a win against Towson. After feeling his way somewhat deliberately in that opener, a more confident and assertive Smith has been on display the past two games, a mini-streak he looks to continue as the Buffs hit the road for the first time this season with a Monday date against Richmond (6 p.m., CBS Sports Network) at the Sunshine Slam in Daytona Beach, Florida. The 25th-ranked Buffs (3-0) will play either Florida State or UNLV on Tuesday.“It definitely feels good to break that hump and get on the floor,” Smith said. “It was different at first adjusting, but it felt normal. I play against good guys at practice every day, so it’s nothing new. I feel pretty comfortable on the court. The first game, I was letting the game come to me, see if I got open shots.
